Bond must be paid for walking trail

A Miami County District Court judge has ruled that a group interested in paving the way for a walking trail near Osawatomie to the Franklin County line must follow state law and pay a bond to the county.Osawatomie resident Doug Walker, who led the effort two years ago, along with members of the Kanza Rail-Trails Conservancy, have been involved in a legal dispute with the Miami County commissioners for more than a year. County officials filed an action in January 2006, asking the court to require the project to comply with state laws.Miami County Counselor David Heger filed a petition in court on behalf of the Miami County Commission, directing Kanza Rail-Trails Conservancy president Frank Meyer of Herington, Kan., and Walker to abide by state law by meeting with county staff members, disclosing plans about developing the trail and filing a bond with the county clerk.In September, Walker said county officials were demanding a $76,120 bond for 4.5 miles of trail.


Hotels sue Homewood over lodging tax

Lawyers representing a group of 14 Homewood hotels announced Friday the filing of cases against the city of Homewood regarding back lodging taxes and interest totaling $800,000.

Hotels have been fighting the city in court over an increased lodging tax since 2005 and, until December, tried to negotiate a settlement to pay the back taxes owed.

Work begins on the long-awaited Rite Aid project at the intersection of Ridgecrest Boulevard and China Lake Boulevard. Crews began demolition of the old Sal's Market and removed the slab from the neighboring businesses. The developer, Halferty Development, recently closed escrow on the market and old SASS properties. The old J.D.'s is still in escrow.
